Matthew Havertz as a Missionary

The missionary word scramble Reporting to the MTC was submitted by Matthew Havertz. Matthew served in the West Virginia Charleston Mission from 2011 to 2013. Here is the original journal entry.

June 1, 2011

Dear Journal,
Today I reported to the MTC! I absolutely love it here so far. This first day was incredible. The Spirit is amazing! Very busy, but it's great.
I like my companion, Elder Royer, he is awesome. He has good insights when talking about the Gospel and he is really kind-hearted. Everyone here is nice so far.
I hope to gain a lot from my mission. I always could be a more prepared, but I hope to learn a lot.
I don't have a ton of time to write in my journal, but I want to mention a few things quickly ...
My farewell went great. Didn't write the last half of my talk until the night before, but I think I did well. Also, I am very, very grateful for all the support I have from family and friends. I finished my song and gave copies away as gifts at my farewell.
Last, my setting apart was great. One thing that stood out to me was that President F. blessed me with the ability to forgive in my heart and with my lips very quickly. It sounded like some members were going to offend me or something. He also blessed me with the power of discernment and all the other gifts and abilities I'll need on my mission.
He went around the room and asked people what attributes they thought I possessed that would make me a good missionary. Krystal said strong. Nana said steadfast. Grandpa said understanding of the Gospel. Someone said spiritual and I can't remember the rest, but they were very kind words. My stake president pronounced some awesome blessings on me.
I'm excited to be out on my mission and I'm going to try and write a small amount every night!

The Context

"I've heard the MTC (Missionary Training Center) described as a prison for good people. Sometimes I felt that was true, but most of the time I really enjoyed it, really. It was a very spiritually uplifting experience and the food was good.

"I had been told my whole life missionaries had to work hard and long hours. I specifically remember praying the MTC, that first night, that I would take the work ethic I learned on my mission into my life after my mission, for example, into my school work. I've thought back on that experience many times. It causes me to want to be my best and work harder."

Testimony

"I know the Book of Mormon is the most powerful written testament of Jesus Christ on the earth. I owe Jesus Christ everything. He is my Savior. To learn more how I gained this testimony, see my blog post about it."
